QR Coded Labels
A QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response code) is a type of matrix barcode (or two-dimensional barcode).
QR codes are a well established technology in many industries, which can be used to provide a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached.
As you can see there is potential for dramatic reduction in the size of care label through substitution of printed text with a QR Code.

This is due to -
- • Printing a limited number of languages directly onto label
- • The other languages can be held in the QR code (At Byways we have a full universal translation database available to our customers)
- • Reduction in the amount of blank space
Reducing the amount of printed information, creates a reduction in the size of the care label length - cost saving and environmental benefits of using less material (We can also supply 100% recycled satin ribbon, further reducing environmental impact).
Legislations And Restrictions
The QR code for care labelling is a retailer-led consumer facing option for care information providing translations eliminating the need for multi-translations on labels, however it does not replace the requirement for the information to appear on the label itself according to laws of the countries the goods are being sold to.
If used for care and brand information (and care information is not a mandatory requirement for the countries where Retailer stores or concessions are located), the advice would be to meet consumer expectation and have the care symbols printed on the labels, then brands are at liberty to include a QR code with additional care information.
For further advice on legislations and restrictions using QR codes, we suggest discussing options with UK Fashion and Textile Association (UKFT). www.ukft.org.
The Benefits of QR Codes
HOLDING TRANSLATIONS
Reduce the amount of languages printed on the care label by storing them in the QR code to scan
LINKING TO YOUR WEBSITE
As well as providing care label data the QR code can link the customer to other products you sell online
TRANSPARENCY OF SUPPLY BASE
Includes details such as supplier name or supplier number and their compliance status for traceability and transparency
SUSTAINABLE STORY
Link back to your website to tell a story about a garment or recycle your old clothes in store
